Don’t Turn Your Business Over to the Assistant

Don’t Turn Your Business Over to the Assistant

The companies getting the most value from AI are not skipping discovery, research, testing, and measurement. They’re accelerating them.

AI works best when it amplifies existing pipelines. When it becomes a substitute for understanding customers, teams simply build the wrong thing faster.

The temptation is strong. Hand over everything to AI, research, design, development, analysis. Ask a question, get an answer. Describe a product, get a prototype.

The outputs can be impressive.

That does not mean you solved anything.

AI is a powerful assistant. It is not a replacement for judgment, experience, or understanding.

Discovery

Customer interviews, support tickets, analytics, and stakeholder interviews. These are the mainstays of UX design and are just as important as ever.

AI can help create intake forms and questionnaires and can even send outreach emails. It can organize incoming feedback and help categorize large volumes of data. Agents can help automate the collection process and reduce administrative overhead.

That is valuable.

But real understanding comes from talking to customers.

Discovery is about understanding human behavior, motivations, and obstacles, and as industry professionals, we are best suited for that task.

No AI summary will ever fully replace hearing a customer describe their frustrations in their own words.

Deriving Insights

Once research is collected, the challenge becomes finding insights.

Data can be fed into AI systems to identify pain points and opportunities. A task that once required days of manual synthesis can often be completed in minutes. AI can surface trends, identify themes, and suggest paths forward.

Where we have the edge is identifying which problems are strategically important.

AI surfaces possibilities. Humans decide which problems are worth solving.

Ideation

AI can think up features in minutes. It can suggest alternatives and challenge assumptions.

The real challenge is not generating ideas. It’s recognizing which align with customer needs, business goals, and technical constraints.

That requires judgment.

This is where experience matters. Evaluate options, debate tradeoffs, make decisions. AI can contribute to the conversation, but it should not be the one making the calls.

AI can brainstorm. Teams make product decisions.

Design

Wireframes, flowcharts, content maps, and prototypes can all be accelerated with AI.

Inspirational images and design systems can be used as inputs to AI. This reduces the time required to explore possibilities.

But speed should not be confused with quality. AI is reductive by nature. It can’t set trends or deliver on styles that are decades in the making.

AI-generated designs are a starting point. The real work remains evaluating those options and refining them into experiences that customers love.

AI will create a capable interface. A professional designer will create an inspired one.

Testing

Use AI to create testing strategies, create surveys, and feedback forms. It excels at data analytics and can be a great time saver.

Real-world testing is still the best option to improve your products.

Observing confusion, frustration, and success provides context that automation will miss.

AI can help organize findings. Nothing beats watching a customer wrestle with your interface.

Build

AI has dramatically accelerated development.

Teams can now create prototypes and MVPs faster than ever. Vibe coding has rewritten the rules on what it takes to make a minimum viable product.

When you move into production, hiring a programmer is necessary.

Products require code review, security reviews, and financial interactions to be closely vetted and monitored. AI-generated code requires oversight.

Successful teams treat AI as a development accelerator, not an autonomous engineer.

AI moves fast. It can also create problems fast.

Measure

The work does not end when something ships.

Analytics, customer feedback, and continuous refinement remain essential parts of creating products.

AI excels at analyzing behavioral data and surfacing opportunities for improvement.

Team members still need to review findings, challenge assumptions, and decide what actions to take next.

The goal is not more reports. The goal is better decisions.

AI Is an Accelerator, Not a Replacement

The companies getting the most value from AI are not eliminating discovery, research, testing, and measurement.

They are accelerating them.

AI is exceptional at handling repetitive tasks, organizing information, and speeding up execution. It reduces friction throughout the product development process.

Where it is less capable is understanding.

Customers. Markets. Tradeoffs. Understanding which problems deserve attention.

Don’t turn your business over to an assistant, no matter how capable the assistant.
